Last Friday, I talked about discipline and mentioned that part of discipline is surrender. This is a follow up to that discussion.

What does it mean to surrender your life to God? I’m not sure that I’ve arrived at the answer, but what I do understand of surrender are these things:

Surrender means…
  • Humility
  • Dying to yourself
  • Being willing to live God’s way
  • Letting go of control
  • Letting God handle your life and influence your decisions
  • Sacrifice - giving up anything you hold onto that keeps God from being God and keeps you from being all He wants you to be (fears, bad habits, and attitudes, including pride, unthankfulness, and unbelief)
  • Accepting who you are as sinner yet precious child of God
  • Accepting who God is as Sovereign Creator, loving, faithful, and trustworthy
  • Accepting God’s grace and blessings even though you think you don’t deserve them
  • Trusting God without knowing the end to the story (a.k.a. blind faith)
  • Realizing that true, lasting change happens only with God’s help
All that being said, surrender is not passively sitting back and doing nothing, but actively handing over your life to God. It’s a continual, even daily, process…every time we try to take back control, we must keep handing it back over to God.

Maybe you’ve heard this quote: “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results every time.” If your way of handling life isn’t working for you, maybe you ought to try something different.

Listen to Jesus’ words to His disciples in Luke 9: "If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?” (Luke 9:23-25, NIV)

When we surrender our lives and decisions to God, He does incredible things. We free Him to be who He is and we allow Him to make us who He created us to be. What could be better than that?!? So, what are you waiting for? Surrender to Him!

In His love,

Kristen
