Ever find yourself short on money but you just HAVE to have something new to wear? I know the feeling!

Thrift stores and consignment shops are fabulous places to find special pieces to update your wardrobe but you have to be willing to use your fashion savvy when shopping in places like these. Here’s the thing, when you walk into thrift or consignment stores it’s very rare that you get that “new” smell. That’s because things aren’t new, silly! You’ve got to find your deep down fashion diva and get your eyes looking for something wonderful!

Here’s the way to do it:

  • Go with an open mind. You probably won’t find that perfect pair of jeans you need right now but you might find the perfect top to go with something you already have.
  • Know the colors that look best on you and seek them out. If black is definitely NOT your color, than skip the black items and look at only the colors that look good on you. You might find three cute tops in your best colors so leave the rest alone and try these on.
  • Don’t look at price first. When trying on the clothes make sure you really like something based on how it looks, not by how inexpensive it is. That’s a good way to end up with a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear because you bought clothes just because they were cheap!
  • Look for accessories in these shops. This is a super duper way to find some really great pieces of jewelry at half the price of what you would in full retail stores. Scarves should be in big supply right now in these shops so stock up on them because they’ll raise your fashion quotient by a gazillion percent! They make any outfit look more hip!
  • Look for a Plato’s Closet in your area. This a fantastic store for teen clothes AND you can turn in your gently worn fashionables for cash! They take everything teen oriented from books and CD’s to jeans, tops, dresses, shoes and handbags. They have a “brand name” standard so they don’t take everything, so check and see what they will take.
  • Vintage stores are a way to shop for items like pretty blouses, skirts and antique jewelry. Just one or two of these pieces will bring beauty to your wardrobe.

Have fun shopping in places like thrift, consignment and vintage stores. Try the local Goodwill or Salvation Army, too, for fun things to decorate your room. Get creative with your wardrobe and your living space by looking outside the box! Be original and don’t settle for paying full price when there are one of a kind finds that will spuce up your wardrobe. Look on-line to find stores close to you and take your best friend along to see who can find the coolest top or accessory by making a game of it. See who has the best fashion “nose” in a place like this…snoop around, check it out and make shopping in these unique, very inexpensive stores an adventure!

Beautiful Blessings,

Shari Braendel
