Proverbs 16:13, “Good leaders cultivate honest speech; they love advisors who tell them the truth.” (MSG)

Have you sat and watched the news lately? If you have for any amount of time it is so sad to see all of the lying and scheming that goes on with leaders. No one is excluded. It involves leaders in various companies, the government, and even the church. Yet as much as that occurs, it is never God’s will.

If you really want to be a good leader, then consider God’s kingdom rules. I just love the Proverbs because they give us such great wisdom for everyday life. This one gives us the definition of a good leader. He or she is one who cultivates honest speech. What does this mean? They value honesty. There is nothing too complicated about that! Not only do good leaders speak honestly and with integrity, but they also surround themselves with others who do the same. Good leaders are not lone rangers. They have advisors and they love for those advisors to tell them the truth. Consider what Proverbs 15:22 says about the importance of having people advise us: “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed” (NIV). Good leaders realize they need honest advisors in their lives to help them continue to walk in the truth.

What kind of leaders has God placed in your life? Look at them and check them by this list:Are they honest? Do they love the truth? Do they have advisors who are honest? Do they listen to their advisors’ input? If the answer is yes to these questions then you have a good leader set before you.

You are going to be a leader in this country one day if you are not already. Test yourself in this too. Do you tell the truth no matter what? If not, why not? Do you love the truth? Do you allow people to advise you, even sometimes when the truth is hard to hear? Don’t ever think you are too young to start thinking about your future. Decide now what kind of leader you will be. Begin developing godly habits to make you a great leader!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for giving us the perfect example of leadership through Christ. He was perfect in every way. Help us to be honest no matter how much it hurts. But let that honesty be coated in love. Also, help us to surround ourselves with honest people who will speak truth into our lives too. Lord, guide us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Think About It:

You will be a leader one day to someone if you are not already. Whether it be our great nation or a mother to children, you will be leading someone. What kind of leader do you want to be?

What leaders do you admire? Are they living like this Proverb?

Live It:

Decide today to walk in complete honesty and truth. Lies only get you into trouble. But be sure that all truth is spoken in love.

Make a list of ways you can cultivate honest speech in your own life. Keep it somewhere and check on it now and again to be certain you are on the right path.
