This week I’d like to introduce you to a good friend of mine. Mattie is just thirteen years old yet she is quite in-the-know when it comes to fashion! She even helped me this summer when we did the photo shoot for my new book that will release next summer. She was the Jr. Stylist on the project!

I asked Mattie to give an account on a few of the top trends this season and she came through with flying colors! I’m proud to share her report here this week.

* Mattie’s Trend Report *

Are you one of those people who wake up and think, “What am I going to wear today?” Do you look in magazines and wonder what’s in?

Here’s the thing, most trends look good, but some just don’t. Let me give you an example. Showing your bra straps are in but they just don’t look good. On the other hand, Converse tennis shoes are in and look great! When you wear your Converse shoes, wear them with skinny jeans. I don’t mean “painted on” skinny jeans, but jeans that are more relaxed on top while getting skinnier as they hit your ankles. Jeans that have a lighter wash in front are terrific this fall, but dark washes are still the most flattering. If you’re not into wearing your Converse shoes with these jeans, then go for a pair of flats. These look first-rate and are very popular. You can wear your flats with your dressier clothes or your casual duds and they are so easy to just slip on and go. They’re also great for school because you can run in them if you’re late for class! They compliment just about everything.

Speaking of things that go with everything, let me tell you about RED!

It is the hot color this fall and looks good on just about every skin tone, whether you are fair, medium or dark in complexion. You might try a red tee with your skinny jeans and Converse shoes for a trendy look. If you want to dress up your look a bit, add a scarf and switch to your flats. If you REALLY want to get fancy, paint your nails green! Yes, you read that right; GREEN NAIL POLISH is IN! If green polish isn’t your thing, I recommend painting one coat of green polish on your nails, then add another color like pink and paint a checkerboard on them!

A fun place to find these new trends is Rue 21. They have the green polish, red tees, and skinny jeans all at reasonable prices.

A final word to you about trends: Just because you see a teen wear something and it’s in style does not mean you have to wear it. Besides, if you always follow the trends, how will new ones be made? So go to your closet and put something together that no one else is wearing. Then when you see someone else try it, you can say, “Hey, I started that trend!”

Wow Maddie,

You are a really great writer! Keep it up! I am so proud and amazed by you! Who knew my kids had such a great and hip sitter? How cool that you get to be a part of this online magazine.

Love you girl - Anne

I must say I'm impressed Mattie. Keep up the "great" work. However, when your doing something you LOVE it's not really work, is it? It's a passion.
