Far Away: Where Are You God?

Sometimes it seems like God is so far away. Where is He when tragedy happens, like the earthquake in Haiti a few months back? Or when children are sold as sex slaves in India? Or when orphans in Africa are starving to death?

And where is He when a neighbor sexually abuses you? Or when you lose your mom to cancer when you’re 14? Or when the school bully chooses you as her target and destroys all your friendships? Or when horrible nightmares and fears keep you up at night?

How could a supposedly good and loving God let such horrible things happen?

Situations like this leave us questioning, “Why?” and “Where are You, God?” There are no easy answers, and the truth is that we won’t have a complete answer this side of Heaven. But we can trust God’s Word because it’s completely true. The Bible says:

*God has a good plan despite difficult circumstances.

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good…”
Genesis 50:20

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
Romans 8:28

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”
Jeremiah 29:11

*He will strengthen our faith and develop our character through hard times, if we let Him.

“We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.”
Romans 5:3-5

“Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don't try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.” (Message)
James 1:2-4

*We have something to look forward to…eternal life, forever with Jesus.

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
2 Corinthians 4:16-18

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’ He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’"
Revelation 21:1-5
