“Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” 1 Peter 5: 8-9 (NIV)

The devil is like a roaring lion. Lions are great hunters. They camouflage themselves so well their prey never knows they are there. Satan is like a lion, more dangerous than we will ever realize. Sadly, we think his intention is just wanting you to do “small sins,” when he really wants to destroy your life. But he’s extremely good at hiding it.

My family and I recently went to “Glow Bowling.” The air was filled with fake smoke, so the patterned laser lights would be visible in the air. The smoke only came to the beginning of the lane, so from sitting at our table it looked great! Once it was my turn to bowl and I was in the smoke it was choking me. I wanted to get out of it.

Satan is like that smoke. When you’re on the right path he makes the wrong one look enticing. If you give in and take the wrong path, the smoke will choke you. Instead of turning and running for God’s arms, many times we begin looking for love, acceptance, and belonging in all the wrong places. Satan will never give you these. He just keeps you wanting more. Check out what God says about Himself: “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete” (John 16:24, NIV).

The good news is that God doesn’t use smoke and mirrors. His path is clear and straight forward, not deceiving and hidden. Satan pretends that he loves you just to entice you, but God loves you so much He died for you. Our God is a wonderful God who wants you joyful. He has wonderful things in store for you if you just trust Him!

Dear Lord, Help me to see Your path and not be deceived by the enemy’s plans. Thank You for always staying by my side even when I stray from You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Ponder: Psalm 119:32, “I run in the path of you commands, for you have set my heart free.” (NIV)

Apply: Memorize Psalm 119:32; every time the enemy tries to deceive you remember this verse.

I don't think anyone can look at a few "symptoms" to see if they are being decieved. I think you just know. My sister always says, "You know that gut feeling you get? That's The Spirit puching you in the stomach." It may sound funny, but it's true. God will always let you know what you are doing is wrong, espcially if you know Him personally and recognise His voice.

Dear Megan, I have to respectfully disagree with you. I agree that God will always let you know what you are doing is wrong, especially if you know Him personally and recognize His voice. But Satan is so cunning that it’s sometimes hard for us to recognize his deception & tricks. God gives many different examples of people who walked with God and were still deceived (like David in his sin with Bathsheba). if I am understanding you right your saying you cant be deceived, cause if you "just know" the second you are deceived then you aren't deceived just tempted. But the Bible says that we can become deceived and yes the Spirit does try to talk to you but as humans many times we close our ears and just don't listen. Eve was deceived by Satan Genesis 3:13. If she knew at that time she was being deceived why would she have taken the bite? She believed Satan when he said she would be like God, that's why she ate. In Luke 21:8 Jesus warns us about being deceived, showing that we can be deceived. 2 Corinthians 11:3 Paul warns again about being deceived, but he also tells us that Satan is cunning it is not always obvious we are being led away in our walk with God. Satan will always try to deceive us, there's no way around Satan deceives the WHOLE world. (Revelations 12:9) At the same time, like 1 Peter 5:8 says (and like you’re saying), we need to be self-controlled alert and watching for Satan’s deception and when we recognize it, we’ve got to resist it. Thanks for your comment Megan!
