“Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, ‘Go south to the road--the desert road--that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’" Acts 8:26 (NIV)
In Acts chapter eight, Philip, a disciple of Jesus is minding his own business when God gives him a commandment, "Go south."
Immediately, Philip turns toward the south. While he's traveling, God directs him to go toward a chariot. Philip sees a man inside the chariot, reading God's Word.
So Philip asks the man, "Do you understand what you're reading?"
The man says, "How can I unless someone guides me?" The man then invites Philip into his chariot to explain what the passage he’s reading.
As a result of this cool encounter, the man in the chariot becomes a Christian and is baptized by Philip.
Philip heard God's voice and because he obeyed, one man and maybe more were saved. I wonder what would have happened if Philip had lived in modern times.
Would Philip have opened his Blackberry and told God he could schedule time to meet with this man at three o’clock tomorrow? Would he have delegated the task to one of his friends? Would he have shrugged and said, “Not my problem, God”?
As I think of Philip’s response and my often over-filled to do lists, I wonder if my response would be the same. Would I drop everything to go out of my way to reach out to one hurting soul who needs to hear the name of Jesus? Would you?
It’s a tough question but it shouldn’t be.
How do you spend your days? Are you looking for that one person that might need to hear about God and his amazing love? Are you willing to sacrifice your time to reach out and share about Jesus?
I want to challenge you to be a Philip this week. Ask God to send you someone - anyone - to proclaim His love to. Pray that your heart and ears will be open so you won't miss the opportunity to reach out to someone else.
Dear God, I ask that You teach me to be like Philip this week, that I would not only listen but also obey Your voice. I pray that You would send each of us someone to minister to this week. Let Your Holy Spirit guide us during the encounter so that You would shine through! In Jesus' name, Amen.
Ponder: Matthew 28:19-20, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (NIV)
Apply: Keep your eyes open for someone you could reach out to this week – maybe the elderly woman in the grocery store or the girl in your youth group who always sits alone. People who need Christ’s love are everywhere!
