Romans 12:1, “And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice--the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.” (NLT)

There’s nothing quite like a three day weekend, is there? Especially during summer when you get the chance to kick back, hit the water and tan a little. There’s something almost magical about them.

Today is Memorial Day and in the middle of our weekend fun, it’s easy to forget about the purpose of this holiday. Originally created to honor the soldiers that sacrificed their lives in the Civil War, Memorial Day is now a day to remember and honor all the soldiers that have sacrificed their lives.

When you sacrifice something, you give it up. You lose all rights. That’s what the soldiers that defend our countries do and that’s what we as Christians are called to do, too. We are called to present our bodies (and our lives) as living sacrifices before God.

Why? Paul tells us why with one phrase ‘because of all he has done for you’. When you stop and think about everything that God has done for you, is it hard to sacrifice watching a TV show that you know doesn’t glorify him? Is it hard to sacrifice a few dollars for an offering when God has done so much for you?

You see, our sacrifice flows from God’s. God gave first. Anything we give, we give because God gave first. If you struggle to give of your time or talents or money, stop and remember God’s sacrifice first.
When we sacrifice, it’s a way to worship God and show others how much he loves us.

Dear God, help me to remember the sacrifice that soldiers have made for me and help me to remember the sacrifice you made for me, too. Make me aware of areas in my life where I can honor you by making a sacrifice .In Jesus' name, Amen.

"Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma." Ephesians 5:1-2 (NKJV)

Look for a way to give your time or talents this week by helping someone else. Maybe you could mow the lawn for an elderly neighbor or give your parents the night off by baby-sitting your younger siblings.
