by Lynn Cowell“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9 NIV
Have you ever had feelings of excitement but knew you were doing something completely wrong? For awhile you had watched from afar, then up a little bit closer and next thing you know, you’re right there. And once you’re there, you found it wasn’t so bad, in fact, it was quite thrilling. At least for now.
Scary isn’t it? How quickly we can slink to doing the one thing that not so long ago we judged another for doing? How did it happen; how did we end up here? Simple really…one small step at a time.
Susie’s mom had often talked to her about remaining pure until she got married. Of course she would! It wasn’t even a question; she had the purity ring to prove it!
That was before Jack. Being with him always made her feel right; he made her problems slide away.
In the beginning of their relationship, the little stories Susie fabricated for her mom were only small lies. We’re going to hang out at the park”; her parents would never let her go to Jack’s when his parents weren’t home! One by one the deceptive lines became Susie’s norm; her secret world crafted behind a wall of dishonesty. The fun was slipping away being replaced by shame and regret.
Have you ever found yourself in a place like Susie? Are you in that place now?
Friend, as our verse today says, you are God’s special possession. You were created to bring praise to him. You have been called out of darkness into his wonderful light. Don’t listen to Satan’s lies any longer. Take steps toward the light. You can do this by telling a friend or parent, someone you can trust and who loves Jesus too! When we pull the secret out of the closet of our lives, it loses its power over us. Leave the darkness behind. Make a choice to do whatever it takes to walk away from the sin that is keeping you from Jesus. Find joy and peace in forgiveness again.
To make your way back, start with these three steps:
· Ask for God’s forgiveness and for him to make your relationship new
· Tell someone who loves Jesus – take the secret out of the darkness
· Move – away from the person, place or thing in the dark place
How will you do this friend? Grab your journal or a piece of paper and write it out. Don't wait or hesitate. That voice you hear that says, "I'll do it later" is not the Holy Spirit. Break away now, friend!
